When I am chosen to curate an exhibition it is a great honor…
but there are strings attached!

Role of the Curator

The role of a Curator is to take charge of the entire process of organizing an exhibition from selection of artworks to take down of the show. The process includes liaising with the artist and the gallery or venue where the work will be exhibited.

Timescale

One of the first priorities is to agree a time scale and work out a schedule, which will be an important element in ensuring the smooth installation of any project. These details may be informally agreed, however it is generally advisable to draw up a contract between all parties in the venture.

When the artworks are delivered to the venue, the Curator will oversee the unpacking and first placement of each artwork. Works may be rearranged a number of times, as the Curator tries to establish a relationship between each piece. Getting this balance right is paramount to establishing the final look and flow of the exhibition. Depending on the type of show being curated it may be important to ensure that the artist is consulted to ensure their expectations are met.

The Exhibition

The layout, hanging and lighting of the exhibition need to enhance the artworks and suit the gallery space. The gallery’s requirements are facilitated when presented with an exhibition, which enhances the showing area.

The Curator will often oversee the production of invitations, exhibition catalogue, promotional materials, media and press release information. It is this attention to detail, which will ensure good attendance figures, create a good ambience, that encourages sales and will provide opportunities for wide media coverage of the exhibition.
